The House Bunny has a screenplay written with ten-year olds in mind about a subject that deserves an R-rating. The resulting hodgepodge of unfunny, sophomoric humor and PG-13 T&A, frosted by a sheen of appallingly nauseous "drama," makes for such a noxious brew that it's amazing viewers stay in their seats for the entire production. Then again, it takes absorption of the full 100 minutes for the movie's vomit-inducing power to become evident.

Alas, a scheming member of Hef's bevy of busty beauties wants the staple for herself and orchestrates Shelley's ouster from the Mansion. Facing the loss of their charter and house, the Zetas are in dire need of pizzazz. So Shelley gives the girls makeovers, organizes a blow-out party, and generally acts as Fairy Godmother to these Cinderellas. One might assume that a film featuring Hugh Hefner, the Playboy Mansion, and a centerfold photo shoot would be enough to guarantee an R-rating. However, because the distributor demanded a PG-13, The House Bunny limits its sexual references to innuendo and the only nudity is a quick shot of a body-double's backside. And is Hugh Hefner so desperate for publicity that he can't resist being a party to this?

Often Faris will breathlessly misunderstanding an innuendo before deftly pulling a comedic 180, growling, cursing, and pratfalling in increasingly more ridiculous ways. It’s both sides of Faris’ lovely, vulgar brand of comedy wrapped up in one tube top-wearing role. In the United States, it is currently more popular than Whiteout but less popular than One Missed Call. Phi Iota Mu intercepts the invitations and prevents them from being mailed out, so the Zetas are again in danger of being shut down at the campus meeting of the Panhellenic Council. Oliver and Shelley reconcile, and Shelley explains that she likes Oliver a lot and was trying too hard to impress him. They decide to start over with their relationship and Oliver is looking forward to getting to know the "real" Shelley.
Mean Girls
Director Fred Wolf doesn't have a long filmography to judge his career by, but this isn't an auspicious calling card. Perhaps the most appalling aspect of the movie is not its penchant for recycled pratfalls and dumb blonde humor, but its sanctimonious and sentimental climax. The shameless manipulation of this misguided scene is more likely to trigger the gag reflex than tug at the heartstrings.
It’s about these young adults learning to recognize and ultimately embrace something they cannot achieve on their own — their own brand of femininity and sexuality. By the end of the film each of these young women finds her own middle ground, somewhere between Shelley’s push-up bra creation and their own individuality. All of these pink-lined makeovers help these women find themselves rather than mask them, much like a raunchier version of Legally Blonde. At a time when so many filmmakers are attempting to do new and interesting things with comedies, a forgettable throw-back like this is intolerable. There's not a single fresh idea or moment present in the entire movie, and watching the predictable comedy unfold is like hearing your uncle tell the same old jokes (that weren't that funny to begin with) for the dozenth time.

After getting kicked out of the Playboy mansion for being too old at the ripe age of 27, Shelley (Anna Faris) has to find a new place to live. Through a series of misunderstandings and parade of college girls, Shelley finds herself on the doorstep of Zeta Alpha Zeta house, the lowest-ranked sorority on campus that’s in danger of having its charter pulled. The only thing that can save Zeta and the home these misfit young women love is if the sorority recruits 30 new members.

And though she may get carried away often, it’s clear that what Shelley and her big heart ultimately want is for these young women to be happy and confident with themselves. In essence, The House Bunny is Revenge of the Nerds with girls, although, by comparison, the quality of this production makes that of the 1984 feature seem like the work of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Admittedly, the PG-13 makes sense because it's impossible to conceive of an adult finding anything in this film palatable, never mind entertaining. The House Bunny has always been a more complicated film than we give it credit for, especially when held under 2018’s lens. Its blatant sexualization and “boys will be boys” attitude toward the male-driven institutions of power are so pronounced, they cross into satire. But even in the movie’s darkest moments, it’s Shelley’s endearing embrace of sisterhood that stands out. The House Bunny is far from a perfect movie, but it deserves way more than the eye roll we’ve given it.
The combination leads all the girls to learn how to stop pretending and start being themselves. It would have been easy to turn this movie into cruel mockery of women for 97 minutes. Broad comedies aren’t great to women, especially college-aged women, historically. But though The House Bunny was happy to deliver predictable jokes about dumb blondes, manipulative women, and of course Playboy bunnies it always had heart underneath those cheap laughs. The House Bunny isn’t a story about a group of women transforming into Stepford sorority girls, though that certainly does happen in its first act.
